| Bière de Garde, which means “beer that has been kept or lagered,” is a French farmhouse ale that is unfiltered. They are usually light in color, but strong in flavor and alcohol content. Some have fruit or spices added for extra flavor. They can be very cloudy in appearance. 2012 marks the bicentennial of the state of Louisiana and Abita is proud to help celebrate 200 years of statehood. In 1812 the eighteenth star was added to the flag of the United States of America to represent the brand new state of Louisiana. The 18th Star Bière de Garde is a tribute to our French heritage. Our 18th Star Bière de Garde is made with pilsner and wheat malts as well as oats. This will give the beer a light color, but it will still be full-bodied and strong. It will also give the beer a cloudy appearance. It is hopped with German Perle hops and spiced with lemon peels. This will impart a slightly citric flavor and aroma. This blends well with the natural flavors from the yeast but are not overpowering. The flavors become subdued and more balanced during the three-month aging process. ABV 7% |
