I fail to understand the glorification of Communism in some segments of our society. What do these people think would happen if they tried to open a small business in Cuba, North Korea, China or Russia?

Comrade Brewing Company’s grand opening on April 26

When David Lin was contemplating ideas for a name for his brewery, he explored the theme of camaraderie among craft brewers. Of course “camaraderie” is a long word, so he chose the shorter “comrade.”

With a strong communism connotation connected to the word, Lin ran with the theme. Thus, Comrade Brewing Company was founded. The logo is a yellow sickle and hammer made of wheat, hops and yeast on top of a red field. On Lin’s business card, his head is super-imposed over Mao Tse-tung’s iconic suit.

“We’re having a lot of fun here,” Lin said. “The only thing we take here seriously is beer.”

Located near Iliff Avenue and Quebec Street in Denver, the 5,300-square-foot brewery is set to have its grand opening on April 26. The space has 120 seats and can hold up to 174 people.

Lin, 31, has been off and on in the craft beer industry over the past decade, working for a variety of breweries, including Dry Dock Brewing. But after working in the corporate dining industry for a few years, he said he knew his heart was in brewing.

“I had worked for a couple other breweries — I just enjoyed it,” Lin said. “This is the fourth time I’ve gone back into the craft beer industry.”

He’s enlisted the help of Marks Lanham, who moved from Oregon to be Comrade’s brewmaster. Lanham’s résumé includes Grand Teton Brewing, Bonyard Beer and Barley Brown’s Brew Pub.

Comrade will offer six beers on tap at the grand opening:
• No Tone: a blonde ale (5.9% ABV)
• DEFCON Red: an Irish red (6.0%)
• Koffee Kream: a coffee milk stout (4.9%) using coffee from local business Kaladi Coffee Roasters
• Superpower: an IPA (7.6%)
• Enhanced Interrogation: a pale ale (6.6%)
• Comrade Kirk McHale’s “Crotch Grabber”: a Cascadian dark ale (6.6%) made in collaboration with Kirk McHale of Thai Me Up/Melvin Brewing in Jackson, Wyo.

Exactly. What if someone started Triumph of the Will Brewing Company with red, white, and black colors and a swastika as the logo? Would this be considered funny or cute?

Those who haven't learned the lessons of the past are destined to repeat them.
