More than 1650 beers were submitted in 65 different categories. Sweetwater Brewing of Atlanta, Georgia was awarded Grand National Champion, winning three gold, three silver and a bronze medal. Boston Beer Company, makers of Samuel Adams, won second and last year's overall winner, Deschutes Brewery of Bend, Ore. won third. For the first time in three years, a group of homebrewers won a gold medal in the barley wine style. This group consisted of Michael Habrat, Chris Bartik, Brett Goldstock, and Suzy Pessutti of San Diego, CA. Other homebrewers who took home medals at the U.S. Open included silver medalist Kent Shultz for his alt sytle beer and bronze medalist David Motter for his ESB. "This competition is significant because it accepts entries from breweries around the world and allows national winning homebrews to compete," said Dow Scoggins, director of the U.S. Open Beer Championships. "This year, the U.S. Open also had its first college in the Top 10. Niagara College Teaching Brewery from Ontario, which sells and distributes its ales and lagers to local retail stores and restaurants, finished 6th with two golds and two silvers. "More than international breweries entered the U.S. Open in 2012, including breweries from Canada, Belgium, Iceland, Germany, Mexico, and England medaled." Competing beers were judged in 65 different beer style categories. This year's judges were from England, Canada and the United States. Along with the medals awarded, a Grand National Champion is awarded based on a point system for beers (5 minimum POINTS) entered in the competition. The top 10 breweries based on the number of beers placing first (3 points), second (2 points) or third (1 point) are: 1. Sweetwater Brewing - Atlanta, GA 2. Boston Beer Company - Boston, Massachusetts 3. Deschutes Brewery - Bend, Oregon 4. Cigar City Brewing - Tampa, FL 5. Black Tooth Brewing - Sheridan, Wyoming 6. Niagara College - Niagara College - Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario 7. Full Sail Brewing - Hood River, Oregon 8. Sprecher Brewing - Glendale, Wisconsin 9. Morgan Street Brewing - St. Louis, Missouri 10. Wow, almost never heard of most of those. but in: French / Belgian Ale GOLD - St. Feuillian Tripple - Brasserie St. Feuillien SILVER - Tripel Karmeliet - Brouwerij Bosteels BRONZE - La Trappe Triple - Bierbrouwerij De Koningshoeven B.V. they never tried many triples then, La Trappe is one of the worst I've had.
