Interview with Eel River Brewing Company
Interview with Eel River Brewing Company
Conducted By: Andy of The Beer In Me
Interview With: Ted Vivatson - Owner
Date: May 2008

T.B.I.M: Where are you located?
Eel River:The Taproom and Grill is located at 1777 Alamar Way in Fortuna, California and the brewing facilities are in Scotia, California.
T.B.I.M: When did Eel River open its doors for business and what is the history behind the brewery?
Eel River: The doors opened in December of 1995, and from the beginning we have embraced the history and culture of our area. The pub and original brewing facilities were built on the former site of the Clay Brown Redwood Mill. You can still see some of that mill's foundation in our beer garden. Our walls are decorated with some of the artifacts and remnants of the logging and fishing industries that founded this area. In 2007, we moved the brewing facilities to the site of another old mill, the Pacific Lumber Company's Mill A, which became vacant due to a downturn in that industry. This move has given us a much needed ten-fold increase in our brewing capacity and allowed us to continue building our legacy of good beer and eco-friendly business practices.
T.B.I.M: Why did Eel River open in California?
Eel River: After careful consideration the state of California was chosen because that's were we live, and with the price of gas now, it has proved to be a wise choice.
T.B.I.M: Who are the owners of Eel River?
Eel River: Ted Vivatson and Margaret Frigon are the co-owners of ERBCo.

Owners Margaret and Ted
T.B.I.M: Who or what inspired the owners to establish Eel River?
Eel River: Each other. Margaret was looking for something more in life and Ted came up with the idea of opening a microbrewery.
T.B.I.M: Who is your brewmaster and tell us about his/her background?
Eel River: We have an awesome brew crew headed by Mike Smith, who is Siebel educated.
T.B.I.M: What is your motto and how did you come up with it?
Eel River: Our motto is "Be Natural; Drink Naked". One of our salesman, Tony Soulier, came up with it as a fun way to promote our organic beer.

Great interview. I have enjoyed a few Eel River IPA's in the past. I can get it in BR. I am slowly moving to all organic brewing myself.

Eel River has just released an Imperial Red (8% ABV) that is called Climax Noel. It is a winter warmer and is exceptional. Living just a few miles away I intend to stock up, but get this if you can. It is great.
