Saison

(French, "season") is the name originally given to refreshing, low-alcohol pale ales brewed seasonally in farmhouses in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium, to refresh farm workers during harvest season. Modern-day saisons are also brewed in other countries, particularly USA, and are generally bottle conditioned, with an average range of 5 to 8% abv, though saisons at the more traditional 3.5% strength can still be found.

Postal Service would love to ship you beer

In its ongoing quest to find new revenue streams, the Postal Service is hinting that Congress should make it legal to use the mail to ship beer, wine and liquor -- which competitors such as Fed Ex (FDX, Fortune 500) and UPS (UPS, Fortune 500) can already do.

Congress would have to overturn a 100-year-old temperance era law that bans shipping any "spirituous, vinous, malted, fermented or other intoxicating liquors of any kind" by mail, said Sue Brennan, spokeswoman for the agency.

5 years later, a more global Anheuser-Busch

ST. LOUIS -- Five years ago this week, Anheuser-Busch Cos. agreed to be acquired by Belgian brewer InBev, creating the world's largest brewer and setting off ripples of worry as uncertainty loomed over one of St. Louis' most revered homegrown businesses.

In the years since the $52 billion deal was announced on July 13, 2008, much has changed at AB's corporate offices at One Busch Place.

Could ending Mexico's beer duopoly bring the craft beer revolution south of the border?

South African beer company SABMiller and several small Mexican beer companies are awaiting an antitrust decision this week that could open a crack in Anheuser-Busch InBev and Heineken International's Mexican beer fortress, which could help competitors establish a larger presence in one of the world's most lucrative beer markets.

Dixie Brewery lawsuit to stop demolition dismissed by federal court

A federal court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the former owners of the Dixie Brewery that sought to stop the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from demolishing a large chunk of the historic building on Tulane Avenue.

U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman of New Orleans ruled June 10 that he did not have jurisdiction over the case. He also determined that the plaintiffs failed to prove that without a preliminary injunction they would suffer irreparable injury and that an injunction would not hurt the public interest, in this case the construction of the VA hospital.

The Once-Lowly Can Is Boosting the Beer Biz

The newest weapon in the battle for the beer drinkers' dollar is actually an old one. The once-maligned can is now taking the spotlight—and shelf space—from the bottle.

The can is becoming an increasing popular option for brewers looking to give consumers another reason to choose their product over another. Canned beer made up 53 percent of the market last year, versus 48 percent in 2006, according to industry trade group The Beer Institute.

Miller Lite is changing the look of its 12-ounce glass bottle

The new bottle is still brown with a blue label, but the shape is entirely different. Perhaps most notable is that the top of the bottle is broader than the bottom. The bottle's neck is also shorter.

In a press release from MillerCoors, the company says the bottle was "inspired by form and design" and that its "contoured grip" is "intended for easy handling from the bar to the pool table."

Anheuser-Busch Merger Deal Clears an Antitrust Hurdle

Anheuser-Busch InBev said on Friday that it had reached an agreement in principle to win government approval for its $20.1 billion deal to buy control of Grupo Modelo, the maker of Corona.

The Obama administration sued on Jan. 31 to block the takeover, arguing that the deal would give Anheuser-Busch InBev too much control over the American beer market, potentially reducing choice while raising prices.

Bud brewer chases premium profits

So what if Budweiser is now in third place among beer brands, behind Coors Light? Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD +1.64%) doesn't need consumers' 30-pack pity when its premium brands are the toast of America's upscale drinking party.

After recording losses in both sales and production every year since 2008, A-B InBev saw an estimated 0.6% uptick in 2012, according to Beer Marketer's Insights. Just don't thank Budweiser and Bud Light, which consumers have been steadily shunning since at least 2009. While those brands have lost market share, A-B's Bud Light Platinum and Lime-A-Rita malt beverage increased sales by 2.5 million barrels combined last year.

Twinkie and Pabst Blue Ribbon are a match made in heaven

PBR's owner, which just bought the signature Hostess brand, has proven it can resurrect old products with smart rebranding campaigns proving once more that Twinkies are indestructible, the brand was rescued from near-death on Wednesday when it was sold to private-equity firm Apollo Global Management and food company Metropoulos & Company. The sale caps a months-long ordeal for the classic snack, whose fate was thrust into limbo when parent company Hostess declared bankruptcy in late 2012.
