The Oldest Brewery In The World

The oldest brewery in the world is believed to be the German state-owned Weihenstephan brewery in the city of Freising, Bavaria. It can trace its history back to 1040 A.D. (although the Zatec brewery in the Czech Republic claims it can prove that it paid a beer tax in 1004 A.D.).

10 Biggest Small Beer Brewers in the U.S.

The small brewer is on the rise in the United States, no matter what name you refer to it by.

There were roughly 80 brewers in the U.S. in the early 1980s and about 1,600 breweries in America back in 2009. According to the Brewers Association craft beer industry group, there are more than 2,500 breweries in the United States today, with more on the way.

Another Miffed Beer Drinker Goes After AB InBev in Court

Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD), the world’s largest beermaker, is beloved on Wall Street for controlling costs and hitting its financial targets as it seeks to blanket the globe with its products like Budweiser and Beck’s. It also has a growing number of unhappy customers. Some of them are taking their grievances to court.

The latest is Francisco Rene Marty, a forlorn Beck’s drinker who resides in Miami. The St. Louis Business Journal reports that Marty has filed a class-action suit against AB InBev in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, accusing it of trying to hoodwink consumers into believing that the Beck’s sold in the U.S. is still brewed in Germany. He has asked for $5 million in damages.

Belgian brewer Duvel Moorgat to acquire Boulevard Brewing

Kansas City- based brewer Boulevard, the 12th largest craft brewery in the United States with production exceeding 180,000 barrels, is about to be acquired by a European beer maker, according to a story published by the New York Times on October 17, 2013.

Belgian brewer Duvel Moortgat has announced a deal to acquire Boulevard, thereby gaining access to a large portfolio of craft beers as well as opening up more markets for its own brands in the United States, and vice- versa. Duvel, which already owns New York's award- winning Ommegang Brewery, is fully aware of the growth of the craft beer industry in the United States and felt the time was right to make another move.

MillerCoors To Expand Leinenkugel Brand

MillerCoors is bullish on the Leinenkugel brand. Crain’s Chicago Business reports the brewing giant is expanding the brand’s product line, advertising and distribution to appeal to a wider range of beer drinkers, similar to how MillerCoors has done with its Blue Moon brand in recent years.

There’s room to grow in the beer marketplace and Leinenkugel, which already has a wide range of styles in its product line, is getting this vote of confidence largely on the strength of sales of its Summer Shandy. Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. President Jake Leinenkugel said half of the company’s business this year has been from sales of Summer Shandy, which became the first of their brands to be available in all 50 states and have national advertising behind it. "We never thought it would be that big but it continues to grow,” Leinenkugel said.

Trading Buds for Micro-Brewskis: Craft Beer's Renaissance Continues to Grow

Beer is having a big moment, a revolution of sorts. When it comes to grabbing a cold one, more people seem to be bypassing the big dogs and seeking out better-tasting craft brews.

"I think that the brewers are driving each other, and I think the drinkers are driving the brewers," said Joe Emswiler, who reviews hundreds of craft beers on his website, properhops.com. "Pretty much anything you want to brew right now, the sky's the limit. People are going to want to try it."

Brewers Hinging Comeback on Boozier Beers

NEW YORK -- Beer drinkers in search of a big buzz may be in luck. Both MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch InBev (A-B) are launching line extensions with higher alcohol content and higher prices in order to take some market share back from growing liquor brands.

According to an Advertising Age report, MillerCoors' new Miller Fortune beer will debut next year with a 6.9 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). Meanwhile, A-B has already launched Bud Light Platinum and Budweiser Black Crown, both with a 6 percent ABV that's higher than the 4.2 percent that is standard for most light beers. Miller Fortune's price will be similar to Bud Light Platinum, which has an average price of $26.17 vs. $20.11 for regular Bud Light.

Top 15 craft beer breweries in the USA

There's that moment when you try a better beer, a beer that's not your average Coors/Bud/Pabst/Enter One-Syllable Beer Name Here, and you're hooked. Not everyone may remember exactly where, or when. You may not even remember what beer it was. But much like a 1-year old who tries his first bite of birthday cake and has his first real taste of sugar, you know you're never going back to that other beer again.

Is This Brewer Biting Off More Than It Can Chew?

For Belgians, beer it's not just a frothy drink. There's a whole culture that lies behind the nearly 500 different types of brew – many of which are served in their own, personalized glass – and the hundreds of breweries that date back centuries.

No wonder Anheuser-Busch InBev's (NYSE: BUD) roots can be traced back to Den Horen, one of the oldest breweries in Belgium. Yet, despite its long heritage and its prominent position in most of the world's top beer markets, over the last couple of years, its revenue growth has gone into a steady freefall.

Postal Service would love to ship you beer

In its ongoing quest to find new revenue streams, the Postal Service is hinting that Congress should make it legal to use the mail to ship beer, wine and liquor -- which competitors such as Fed Ex (FDX, Fortune 500) and UPS (UPS, Fortune 500) can already do.

Congress would have to overturn a 100-year-old temperance era law that bans shipping any "spirituous, vinous, malted, fermented or other intoxicating liquors of any kind" by mail, said Sue Brennan, spokeswoman for the agency.

In the years since the $52 billion deal was announced on July 13, 2008, much has changed at AB's corporate offices at One Busch Place.

Dixie Brewery lawsuit to stop demolition dismissed by federal court

A federal court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the former owners of the Dixie Brewery that sought to stop the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from demolishing a large chunk of the historic building on Tulane Avenue.

U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman of New Orleans ruled June 10 that he did not have jurisdiction over the case. He also determined that the plaintiffs failed to prove that without a preliminary injunction they would suffer irreparable injury and that an injunction would not hurt the public interest, in this case the construction of the VA hospital.

The Once-Lowly Can Is Boosting the Beer Biz

The newest weapon in the battle for the beer drinkers' dollar is actually an old one. The once-maligned can is now taking the spotlight—and shelf space—from the bottle.

The can is becoming an increasing popular option for brewers looking to give consumers another reason to choose their product over another. Canned beer made up 53 percent of the market last year, versus 48 percent in 2006, according to industry trade group The Beer Institute.
