Ordinary Bitter

Ordinary bitter is gold to copper colored with medium bitterness, light to medium body, and low to medium residual malt sweetness. Hop flavor and aroma character may be evident at the brewer’s discretion. Mild carbonation traditionally characterizes draft-cask versions, but in bottled versions, a slight increase in carbon dioxide content is acceptable.

Trading Buds for Micro-Brewskis: Craft Beer's Renaissance Continues to Grow

Beer is having a big moment, a revolution of sorts. When it comes to grabbing a cold one, more people seem to be bypassing the big dogs and seeking out better-tasting craft brews.

"I think that the brewers are driving each other, and I think the drinkers are driving the brewers," said Joe Emswiler, who reviews hundreds of craft beers on his website, properhops.com. "Pretty much anything you want to brew right now, the sky's the limit. People are going to want to try it."

Brewers Hinging Comeback on Boozier Beers

NEW YORK -- Beer drinkers in search of a big buzz may be in luck. Both MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch InBev (A-B) are launching line extensions with higher alcohol content and higher prices in order to take some market share back from growing liquor brands.

According to an Advertising Age report, MillerCoors' new Miller Fortune beer will debut next year with a 6.9 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). Meanwhile, A-B has already launched Bud Light Platinum and Budweiser Black Crown, both with a 6 percent ABV that's higher than the 4.2 percent that is standard for most light beers. Miller Fortune's price will be similar to Bud Light Platinum, which has an average price of $26.17 vs. $20.11 for regular Bud Light.

The top 10 beers worldwide

Craft beers may be giving big brewers a run for their money, but the top-rated beers worldwide in terms of taste come from all over the map, according to one product research site.

Pacifico and Negra Modelo from Mexico, Smithwick's Ale from Ireland, Windhoek Lager from Namibia and Affligem Blonde from Belgium are among the top 10 beers worldwide, according to rankings from FindTheBest, which gathers and filters consumer and expert reviews from across the Web.

Top 15 craft beer breweries in the USA

There's that moment when you try a better beer, a beer that's not your average Coors/Bud/Pabst/Enter One-Syllable Beer Name Here, and you're hooked. Not everyone may remember exactly where, or when. You may not even remember what beer it was. But much like a 1-year old who tries his first bite of birthday cake and has his first real taste of sugar, you know you're never going back to that other beer again.

Is This Brewer Biting Off More Than It Can Chew?

For Belgians, beer it's not just a frothy drink. There's a whole culture that lies behind the nearly 500 different types of brew – many of which are served in their own, personalized glass – and the hundreds of breweries that date back centuries.

No wonder Anheuser-Busch InBev's (NYSE: BUD) roots can be traced back to Den Horen, one of the oldest breweries in Belgium. Yet, despite its long heritage and its prominent position in most of the world's top beer markets, over the last couple of years, its revenue growth has gone into a steady freefall.

Postal Service would love to ship you beer

In its ongoing quest to find new revenue streams, the Postal Service is hinting that Congress should make it legal to use the mail to ship beer, wine and liquor -- which competitors such as Fed Ex (FDX, Fortune 500) and UPS (UPS, Fortune 500) can already do.

Congress would have to overturn a 100-year-old temperance era law that bans shipping any "spirituous, vinous, malted, fermented or other intoxicating liquors of any kind" by mail, said Sue Brennan, spokeswoman for the agency.

5 years later, a more global Anheuser-Busch

ST. LOUIS -- Five years ago this week, Anheuser-Busch Cos. agreed to be acquired by Belgian brewer InBev, creating the world's largest brewer and setting off ripples of worry as uncertainty loomed over one of St. Louis' most revered homegrown businesses.

In the years since the $52 billion deal was announced on July 13, 2008, much has changed at AB's corporate offices at One Busch Place.

Big Mexican brewers forced to open local beer market

MEXICO CITY, July 11 (Reuters) - Mexico's biggest brewers, Grupo Modelo and Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma, have agreed to face more competition to end a dispute over their long domination of the world's sixth biggest beer market.

Mexico's Federal Competition Commission (Cofeco) said on Thursday that Modelo, a unit of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA , and Cuauhtemoc, which belongs to Heineken NV (Other OTC: HEINY - news) , would have to reduce exclusivity deals they have with clients in Mexico over the next five years or face heavy fines.

Dixie Brewery lawsuit to stop demolition dismissed by federal court

A federal court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the former owners of the Dixie Brewery that sought to stop the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from demolishing a large chunk of the historic building on Tulane Avenue.

U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman of New Orleans ruled June 10 that he did not have jurisdiction over the case. He also determined that the plaintiffs failed to prove that without a preliminary injunction they would suffer irreparable injury and that an injunction would not hurt the public interest, in this case the construction of the VA hospital.

The Once-Lowly Can Is Boosting the Beer Biz

The newest weapon in the battle for the beer drinkers' dollar is actually an old one. The once-maligned can is now taking the spotlight—and shelf space—from the bottle.

The can is becoming an increasing popular option for brewers looking to give consumers another reason to choose their product over another. Canned beer made up 53 percent of the market last year, versus 48 percent in 2006, according to industry trade group The Beer Institute.

Miller Lite is changing the look of its 12-ounce glass bottle

The new bottle is still brown with a blue label, but the shape is entirely different. Perhaps most notable is that the top of the bottle is broader than the bottom. The bottle's neck is also shorter.

In a press release from MillerCoors, the company says the bottle was "inspired by form and design" and that its "contoured grip" is "intended for easy handling from the bar to the pool table."

Anheuser-Busch Merger Deal Clears an Antitrust Hurdle

Anheuser-Busch InBev said on Friday that it had reached an agreement in principle to win government approval for its $20.1 billion deal to buy control of Grupo Modelo, the maker of Corona.

The Obama administration sued on Jan. 31 to block the takeover, arguing that the deal would give Anheuser-Busch InBev too much control over the American beer market, potentially reducing choice while raising prices.
