A Farewell to Growlers For Surly Brewing
Per MN State Law (340A.301), Surly Brewing will not be able to get a license to sell growlers in 2009. In 2008, we have sold over 3500 barrels of beer. The cut-off limit for getting that off-sale license is 3500 barrels. So, no more growlers, no more Darkness Day, and no more SurlyFest. Here is the plan for wrapping up growler sales in 2008. The last week of December we will be selling growlers of a new beer we brewed specifically for this farewell to growlers. The beer is a DIPA - double IPA. We do not have enough growlers left for you to purchase, so we came up with a new idea.
Bring in your empty growler and we will clean it and then fill your growler directly from the brite beer tank in the back. We will be selling these growlers for $17 each and here are the hours we will be filling:
December 27th - Saturday Noon-4:00
December 29th - Monday 10:00-6:00
December 30th - Tuesay 10:00-6:00
December 31st - Wednsday 10:00-4:00
We have brewed 30 bbls of this beer. If we run out, we will not have any more to sell.
-All growlers must be returned by December 31st if you wish to get your $3 deposit back.

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in The New Yorker
From Dogfish Head:We're happy (and pretty proud) to let you know that Dogfish Head Craft Brewery of Milton/Rehoboth Beach, DE is prominently featured in the 11/24/08 Food Issue of The New Yorker in a fantastic (okay, maybe we're a bit biased) article about craft beer. The article, "A Better Brew, The Rise Of Extreme Beer" was written by Burkhard Bilger. Bilger spent quite a bit of time with us (both here at the brewery and on the road) for the piece and we had a lot of fun working with him. In the article, Bilger chronicles our test batch of Sah-tea at our Rehoboth Beach brewpub, goes with us on our 2008 trip to the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado, and examines the role of 'extreme beers' in the craft beer world. This is the first time in the history of The New Yorker that they have written a full-length feature on a brewery – and they chose to focus on a little brewery in Delaware!!!
From this LINK, you can read the entire article…

Mikkeller / Brew Dog cooperation

In late November Mikkel goes to Scotland to brew a Barley Wine-style in cooperation with Brew Dog.
Two border-seeking, experimental and wild brew-profiles meet in icy Scotland to brew this beer. I will not even try to hide that my expectations to Mikkeller / Brew Dogs Barley Wine is enormous.

Beer Quote
Collection Reflection
"Linger here and live the past of armored storybooks amassed. Hear the tales of hunt and chase that brought them to this resting place. Each was once a frosty well that time has made a rusty shell with messages inscribed upon that give a glimpse of time that’s gone. Drained of all fermented brews they’re filled with only secret clues of lives they touched with liquid gold and hidden tales ne’er to be told. So ponder this peculiar sight partake of lager, dark or light and muse upon these iron tombs embodied in the Beer Can Room." - Carrie Nation (1846-1911)
