Does Fall offer the best beers of the year?

Yes, I love beers released during the Fall

No, nothing special about Fall

Some of the best, not all

I'm not sure

I really don't care

Presentation: Mine was a 22 oz Bomber that had a theme that looks kind of like an old theater exteriors The name He’Brew Presents BITTERSWEET LENNY’S R.I.P.A. is made to look like a theater sign. The label says this is a “A Double India Pale Ale with Rye Malt” and “Brewed with an obscene amount of malts and hops”. Listed at 10% ABV. There is a silhouette of the late great Lenny Bruce on the neck label. Finally it is Kosher Certified. Really cool label we have here.

Appearance: Poured a nice thick and oily stream from the bottle and settled into my Chimay glass with minimal splash and raised a nice fat off-white head that left lots of fat chunks of lacing on the sides of the glass. Overall this is a feast for the eyes and as the head slowly settles down you are so taken by its overall beauty you almost hate to disturb it.

Nose: This one comes at you with alcohol and piney hops. The aromas just leap out at you and you don’t need to take a deep sniff to get this one. Beside the hops, there are also some distinct but not overwhelming rich malts, toffee, nuts, caramel, and berries. Overall it is hard to imagine a beer smelling any better than this.

Taste: The taste is similar to the nose, and the alcohol, malts and the hops dominate, and there is a serious bitter finish worthy of a DIPA.

Mouthfeel: What can you say about this except is feels rich and creamy and simply hangs on the teeth and tongue. You hate to swallow, but then it tastes just as good going down the back of your throat.

Drinkability: Simply sublime is all I can say. At 10% you would want to be careful, but downing all 22 oz is easy. It is just great from first drop to last.

Overall: This is an unusual Double IPA because of the Rye Malt, but no matter how you measure it this is an impressive brew. I have only got one bottle left of this, but next time I am at Bevmo will pick up some more. I cannot get this one locally, but it keeps well.

I first had this in an imperial pint pour at the Munster, Indiana Brewpub last August. I picked up a bottle and brought home. This review is of the bottle. This has a really cool label as you can see in the photo. This poured a very clear rich amber color with off-white head and good lacing .Nose of ripe fruit, light citrus, and caramel malts. Smooth but lively mouthfeel. Flavor is complex as well, with caramel malts, toffee, nuts, floral hops, and some pine notes. Medium but bitter finish. Good brew. I may not see this one again as it is pretty hard to get except by mail order. But it brought back fond memories of that evening in Munster.

This is from batch 2 and has been in my beer cellar almost two years. This is supposed to get better with age. From the corked and caged 500 ml bottle that I purchased from the brewpub this poured a cloudy yellow gold with a very robust and long-lasting white head that left average lacing. Big nose of fruit, with banana first, but also touches of apple, pears, and apricot. Mouthfeel is rich and almost oily. Yeasty flavor and a dry finish. A really nice and easy drinking Belgian Style Ale.

Presentation: This was a 22 oz Bomber that had a theme and name Cruising with Ruben & The Jets Ale and was brewed in honor of the 40th Anniversary release of this Album from Frank Zappa.. Listed at 8.6% ABV. There is cartoon like drawing on the bottle of the group. Neat label.

Appearance: Poured a nice thick and oily stream from the bottle and settled into my Duvel glass with a satisfying plunk and raised a medium sized off-white head that left light lacing on the sides of the glass.

Nose: This smells strongly of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and ripe fruit. The aromas are very satisfying

Taste: The taste is similar to the nose, and the alcohol, malts and the ripe fruit, and the finish is slightly spicy finish. Alcohol is well hidden.

Mouthfeel: This is rich and creamy on the palate, and kind of glues itself to your teeth and tongue. Slides down the back of your throat like olive oil.

Drinkability: Very easy to drink., but it is so rich you tend to sip it like a fine wine. Not a brew you feel you want to rush through.

Overall: This is another good offering from Lagunitas in this series. I will pick up a few more and see how well it ages.

Presentation: This was a 750 ml bright red ceramic bottle with a regular cap on top. It was handsome, but I am pretty sure I paid a premium price just for the bottle. But without a swing top cap you can’t really even reuse the bottle. I supposed a bottle collector might like one but you are unlikely to purchase more than one of these unless the beer was truly amazing. So lets find out.

Appearance: Poured a dark orange with a medium sized tan head that left moderate lacing on the sides of the glass.

Nose: This smells strongly of caramel malts and ripe tropical fruits like mango and papaya, along with some grassy hops. The aromas overall are very inviting.

Flavor: The taste is strong in the malts, along with the ripe fruit. The finish is long and mildly bitter, and you can taste the alcohol there as well.

Mouthfeel: This is smooth on the palate, and full bodied.

Overall: This is not just a high alcohol Dead Guy, but seems like a different beer entirely. As I suspected, if it were not for having to pay a premium price for that silly ceramic bottle I would probably buy more of this. If they put this out in a regular bottle I would drink it again.

Last nights only beer was a bomber of Moylans IPA, a year old and out of my beer cellar (which is down to 49 degrees today ... it has been cold here).

So how good was a year old IPA? Quite good I would say.

It Poured a nice cloudy dark gold color that tended toward orange, with a big, long-lasting slightly off-white head that left thick and sticky lacing. Big nose of malts and hops, with distinct citrus overtones. Flavor is much the same as the nose except there is a more spicy aspect. Really clean mouthfeel and decent finish. Good balance, and overall a quality IPA. I have a few more of these in the cellar for some cold winter evenings.

For December 17th my first beer was a bottle of Full Sail Brewmasters Reserve Nut Brown Ale. From a 22 oz bottle this poured a very dark red that looked muddy brown from the front but was very clear held up to the light. It raised a robust rocky tan head, and left very sticky lacing like carpenters glue on the sides of the glass. See photo of head below when first poured, and later after it tried to settle. Nose was of roasted malts with some light coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel was very smooth and rich tending to being almost slick. The flavor is mostly of the roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate, burnt toast, and the nuts that give it the name. The finish is long and dry This is a without a doubt one of the finest brown ales I have seen. A worthy brew I will try to find again.

My second beer for December 18th was a Kirkland German Style Lager. The bottle says. "An authentic German style lager brewed with pilsner, dark-roasted Munich, and dark caramel malts. The result is a deep, golden-colored beer with smooth body. The best ingredients create the best beer. We use a bottom-fermenting yeast strain from the Weihenstephan yeast bank from Freising, Germany, and aroma hops from the renowned Hallertau region in Southern Germany. ABV 5.5% Bitterness 22 IBU.

This is contract brewed under the brewer name Hopfen Und Malz for Costco by the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company.

This poured a very clear deep amber color, with a moderate white head and light lacing. Nose is of lightly roasted caramel malts and grassy hops. Very smooth mouthfeel. Flavor shows some nuttiness, and the finish is slightly bitter. Nothing fancy here, but a very well balanced beer that would make a great session beer.

I next tried two more of the Costco beers. First the Amber Ale.

The description on the Amber bottle said "Coppery brown with rich, malty character-this perfectly brewed amber ale gets its good looks from the dark-roasted crystal malt that we import from England. To give it some Western flair, it is moderately hopped with hops straight from the Yakima Valley in Washington. ABV 5.7% Bitterness 25 IBU.

Contract brewed under the brewer name Hopfen Und Malz for Costco by the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company.

This poured a rich copper color with a fat white head and good lacing. Nose if caramel malts and pine hops. Smooth and clean mouthfeel. Favor is very malty with a slightly bitter finish. A very workman like amber. Not my favorite beer type, but this one was pretty decent.

The second beer was the Hefeweizen. The beer label read, "Here is your German lesson for the day-Hefeweizen translates to mean “wheat and yeast,” and our beer takes that to heart. Containing a high percentage of malted wheat and a proprietary yeast strain, we have produced an American version of the classic German specialty. A high level of effervescence and a low level of bitterness make this beer truly refreshing. ABV 5.5% Bitterness 16 IBU.

Contract brewed under the brewer name Hopfen Und Malz for Costco by the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company.

This poured a color like butterscotch with a very aggressive white head and lots of lacing. The nose is very yeasty with a strong malt profile and a slight tinge of flowers. Very clean mouthfeel, which makes you want to swish it over your tongue. Flavor shows some banana, and it is good to the last drop. This is a very drinkable beer, and quite a buy if you could get a whole case of just this. But Costco only sells this by the mixed case, so you have to be willing to drink the other three - Amber, German Lager, and Pale Ale .
